Human nature finds happiness in pursuing goals rather than achieving them. Happiness is found in the journey, not the destination.
We are hard wired to pursue happiness. Research shows that if we value happiness too much, and delay happiness to when we finally achieve our goal, it makes us less happy once we actually achieve it.
But what's the definition of happiness?
S - Spiritual Wellbeing (deeper meaning in our life)
P - Nutrition, Rest, Recovery (good health)
I - Intellectual Wellbeing (curiosity, learning, nature)
R - Relational Wellbeing (quality time with people)
E - Emotional Wellbeing (Feeling all emotions and being conscious)
All of these components play a part in the overall feeling of happiness
Taking a step back, we need to explore models of happiness.
Model 1 - associated with the West (you become happy when you achieve your goals)
Model 2 - associated with the East the future doesn't make you happy, focus on the present (meditation, mindfulness)
We need a combination of these models, to get the best of both worlds.
Goals matter in the context of happiness because it is part of our nature to want to get better. But the achievement of these goals don't make us happy, it is the existence of these goals.
Having meaningful goals, going towards them liberates you to go towards them giving your day to day life a sense of purpose and direction.
